Hypothesis:
Part 1: Effect of Temperature:
If rate of reaction is related to the temperature of the water, the warmer the water is, the faster the rate of reaction will be.
Independent Variable: Temperature of water (9°, 51°, 80°)
Dependent Variable: Rate of reaction
Control Variables: Number of Alka Seltzer Tablets, Exact Temperature of Water, Amount of water
Part 2: Effect of Concentration
If rate of reaction is related to the concentration of HCl (0.01M, 0.5M, 1.0M), the higher the concentration of HCl, the faster the piece of zinc metal will dissolve.
Independent Variable: Concentration of HCl (0.01M, 0.5M, 1.0M)
Dependent Variable: Rate of reaction
Control Variables: Size of the zinc metal piece, Amount of HCl, Temperature of water
Part 3: Effect of Surface Area
If rate of reaction is related to the surface area of the Alka Seltzer tablets (whole tablet, chunks, crushed), then more surface area of the tablets being exposed to the water will result in a faster the rate of reaction.
Independent Variable: Surface area of Alka Seltzer Tablets (whole tablet, chunks, crushed)
Dependent Variable: Rate of reaction
Control Variables: Volume of Alka Seltzer Tablets, Temperature of water, Amount of water
Part 4: Effect of the Presence of a Catalyst
If rate of reaction is related to the presence of a catalyst (nothing, CuCl₂, NaCl, KI), then the Copper Chloride will cause the fastest decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Independent Variable: Type of catalyst present (Nothing, CuCl₂, NaCl, KI)
Dependent Variable: Rate of reaction
Control Variables: Amount of catalyst added, Amount of dish soap added, Amount of Hydrogen Peroxide, Concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide
